Export formats

I have created report project using Business Intelligence Development Studio. When i use Preview tab or run report from Visual Studio in debug mode there is 6 formats available for export. But when i open the same report in Windows Forms based application using ReportViewer control there is only 2 export formats: PDF and Excel. How can i configure ReportViewer control to show all export formats?

I do not know what "Windows Forms based application" you are using, but the list of available formats is in rsReportServer.config in the <Render> section. You should see about 10 <Extension Name> entries. This tag has a 'Visible' attribute that can hide extensions (Visible="false"). This is how our custom viewer determines what is available.

Also note that the server returns these in the order that they are in the config file, so you can arrange them here. And, the first item will be the default.

The report viewer controls are limited to PDF and Excel:

Thanks, Donovan.

Igor,

Is your Windows Forms application configured to use the ReportViewer control in local mode, or in server mode?

ReportViewer control in local mode (where your report is in .rdlc file in the application project, and your application doesn't connect to the Reporting Services server) has only PDF and Excel renderers. They are built into the control itself.

If you want to use renderers from the report server, you would have to use the control in server mode, publishing the report to the Reporting Services server and changing data binding as appropriate.

OK, i have read something like that. But Microsoft's RSReportHost.exe use the same ReportViewer control and has 6 formats available.

ReportViewer control in my application is configured to use server mode. And report is on server.

My <Render> section looks like this:

<Render>

<Extension Name="XML" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.XmlDataRenderer.XmlDataReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.XmlRendering"/>

<Extension Name="NULL" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.NullRenderer.NullReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.NullRendering" Visible="false"/>

<Extension Name="CSV" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.CsvRenderer.CsvReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.CsvRendering"/>

<Extension Name="IMAGE" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.ImageRenderer.ImageReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.ImageRendering"/>

<Extension Name="PDF" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.ImageRenderer.PdfReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.ImageRendering"/>

<Extension Name="RGDI" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.ImageRenderer.RemoteGdiReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.ImageRendering" Visible="false" LogAllExecutionRequests="false"/>

<Extension Name="HTML4.0" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.HtmlRenderer.Html40RenderingExtension,Microsoft.ReportingServices.HtmlRendering" Visible="false" LogAllExecutionRequests="false"/>

<Extension Name="HTML3.2" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.HtmlRenderer.Html32RenderingExtension,Microsoft.ReportingServices.HtmlRendering" Visible="false"/>

<Extension Name="MHTML" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.HtmlRenderer.MHtmlRenderingExtension,Microsoft.ReportingServices.HtmlRendering"/>

<Extension Name="EXCEL" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.ExcelRenderer.ExcelRenderer,Microsoft.ReportingServices.ExcelRendering"/>

</Render>

As you can see XML, CSV, IMAGE and MHTML formats are not disabled. And they are indeed available when report is rendered by Microsoft's RSReportHost.exe. But in my own application ReportViewer control shows only Excel and PDF.

|||

Just to troubleshoot the issue, can you render the report in Report Manager (http://localhost/Reports) on the server, and check which rendering extensions are available in the server's Export drop-down box.

Thanks

Server's drop-down box is also limited to PDF and Excel formats. Is this limitation of reporting services in SQL Server 2005 express edition?

Yes. Export on SQL2005 Express Edition is limited to PDF and Excel.

Export Database as a sql file

I am using SQL Server 2005 Express with SQL Server Management Studio Express. I do not find a tool in SQL Server Management Studio Express to convert a database into a sql file. I want a TSQL command to export a database as a sql file.

Advance thanks.

What do you mean by SQL File? A few thoughts come to mind.

1) Backup file

2) Detached MDF

3) Script of the database and/or data.

Please let me know and I'll try to help further. If you indicate the purpose of the export, then I might be able to suggest a few more ideas. Integration services is not available with Express, so you will not be able to simply export data from one database to another format without the full version of SQL Server 2005. From a SQL Command automated aspect, you might be best off backing up the file or creating a script to export the data.

Chris

|||I just meant the script of the database and data. I believe there should be some TSQL commands to do this.|||

You can create dynamic SQL to generate the data for the tables. The SQL would be a SELECT statement that generates INSERT statements as text. If you use this method, you will need to be careful in order to account for single quotes in the data. I've always used Generate Scripts for creating the database stucture, but you can look at the sys.objects and sys.columns (SQL 2005) for sysobjects and syscolumns (2000) along with sys.types in order to generate your own version of the schema. You can create a cursor to loop through the tables in sysobjects and read the syscolumns for each table and then generate the data. This won't be a speedy solution though, depending on how much data you have.

Chris Winland

|||

Nope, there really aren't. Scripting the database is doable, and the tools are there in SSMS as well as SQL Server managment objects (SMO). You could also use SMO to script the data if you wanted.

|||In SQL Server Management Studio, there's a wizard to create all the objects (database, tables, constraints, etc.) But there is none for data. You have do create your own script to generate an INSERT statement based on the data you have from your source database.|||

Giritharan--

this is the same problem, which i was struggling a few months ago, what i did i create the SP for that

1) Backup SP Generates plain text file(can set as .sql one) , includes Schema + data (full) for connected DB.

2) Restore SP which does the reverse.

if u want u just mail me : gsgill76@.yahoo.com, or gsgill76@.gmail.com

Hope that will help u

Export data to SQL Insert statements?

Is it possible to export data from tables to SQL insert statements? Got SQL 2005 developer, visual studio 2005, and Visio enterprise architect, if that makes any difference. I already foundthis tool but it costs money.

HI

DaFT is an open source frontend to any database that can be connected via ODBC and it can Create INSERT Scripts for you.

You can download here:http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=102868

Click help ,choose Contents and type "Create INSERT Scripts " to search and you can get the help on how to generate insert scripts.

Hope it helps.

export a table

I tried to write a package for transferring SQL 2005 table to a flat file in
Visual Studio. However I got the unicode error message at the destination
even though I only use English. Does anyone has idea? Thanks.
The message is as following :
Error: Column "Status" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode
string data types.
Error: ... ( The same message with all the column in the source table)
Please help. Thanks.

Sounds like source database may be using nvarchar for its columns?
Probably need to cast them (and possibly lose unicode data, but sounds like
you have none) before you export them.

I'll try; No, please use "microsoft.public.sqlserver.integrationsvcs" and
I'm wondering if you mean by "overwrite" that you want it to have the data-converted
columns have the same names, yes you can do that but note you will still
be generating a new lineage for the converted column and all of the overhead
associated with that.

Since this happens intermittently, it's difficult to research. I think the
best you can do, is to go to
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback and report it. Maybe
the stack dump gives enough for information for the developers to track
it down.

|||Hi Robert,
I understand that you encountered SSMS crashed when you right clicked on a
database and selected "New Query". Your SQL Server 2005 x64 ran on Windows
XP x64 Edition.
If I have misunderstood, please let me know.
Appreciate your understanding that due to resources limitation, dump
analysis can only be done by Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS).
However in our managed newsgroup, you can get suggestions from other
perspectives.
I recommend that you use ProcessMonitor to monitor your SqlWb.exe. When
this issue occurred, check the logs to see if there are helpful clues.
Also, you may mail me (changliw_at_microsoft_dot_com) the logs for further
research.
You can get the tool from this link:
Process Monitor v1.12
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processmonitor.mspx
Also, as the most efficient possible workaround, I would like to know if it
is possible for you to reinstall your SQL Server 2005 client tools. You
can unintall the client tools from Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs,
select Microsoft SQL Server 2005, click Remove, unselect "Remove SQL Server
instance components", select "Workstation Components" from the list of
"Remove SQL Server 2005 common components", click Next.
If there are no clues in the logs and if this issue persists after your
reinstallation, to track the root cause, dump ananlysis may be required. In
this case, it is recommended that you contact Microsoft Customer Support
Services (CSS) via telephone so that a dedicated Support Professional can
assist you recover the server in a more efficient manner. Please be advised
that contacting phone support will be a charged call.

Execution Plan Creation: Freezing of SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Application

From time to time...while using SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Application the entire application will 'freeze' during some specific activities. Primarly this happens while using the GUI Tool to rebuild all of the indexes or when you are having SQL Server also create the execution plan of a set of queries while executing the queries.

It happens consistently and on several different machines here in the office.

Is a new version of the Management Studio tool planned for a release in the next few months What can be done now to get around the problem?

Thank you.

...cordell...

Management Studio isn't supposed to block user input even when queries are running, so any long freezes would be a defect. Could you please file a defect report for this on http://connect.microsoft.com? Defects reported on the connect site go directly into the team's defect tracking system so we don't lose any information. Customer reported issues have additional weight when we are prioritizing future work.

How frozen is Management Studio? Does it come back after a while, or is it hung forever? If it comes back, how long does it take before it becomes responsive again?

Other than service packs, I'm not aware of any new releases of Management Studio planned before the next major SQL Server release.

As for workarounds, I know it would be less than ideal, but if you know Management Studio is going to be unresponsive for a while, you could start a second instance of Management Studio so you can keep working while the first one is blocked.

Hope this helps,
Steve
